Appeal Business Rates Ltd is seeking an experienced Business Rates Surveyor or Rating Consultant to join our growing practice.

The role will involve reviewing non-domestic property assessments and managing cases through the Valuation Office Agency’s Check, Challenge and Appeal process. You will work with a varied portfolio of commercial properties across England, including retail premises, offices, warehouses, workshops, hospitality properties and other specialist hereditaments.

Key responsibilities

• Review Rateable Values, valuation schemes and VOA assessment data.

• Assess the merits, risks and likely outcomes of potential rating cases.

• Examine leases, rents, floor areas, property use, plans, photographs and other supporting evidence.

• Research and analyse rental and rating comparables.

• Prepare professional valuation reports, Checks and Challenge Statements of Case.

• Manage cases through the VOA Check, Challenge and Appeal process.

• Respond professionally to VOA enquiries and evidence requests.

• Negotiate assessments with VOA caseworkers where appropriate.

• Maintain accurate case records and provide clear progress updates.

• Identify any risk of an assessment being maintained or increased before a case proceeds.

About you

The successful applicant should have practical experience of non-domestic rating and a sound understanding of rating valuation principles and the VOA Check, Challenge and Appeal process.

IRRV, RICS or other relevant professional qualifications are desirable, although applications from experienced rating practitioners working towards qualification are also welcomed.

You should be able to:

• Analyse rating assessments and valuation evidence independently.

• Produce clear, evidence-led reports and Statements of Case.

• Manage a varied caseload and meet statutory and internal deadlines.

• Communicate confidently with clients, the VOA and other professionals.

• Work accurately, commercially and with a high level of professional integrity.

The position

This is a nationwide role that can be undertaken remotely, with occasional property inspections or meetings where required.

We are open to discussing:

• Full-time employment.

• Part-time or flexible working.

• Self-employed consultancy work.

• Case-by-case instructions for an established rating professional.

Salary: £40,000–£60,000 depending on experience, with performance-related bonus. Consultancy fees can be agreed separately for self-employed applicants.

To apply, please submit your CV together with a short summary of your business-rates experience, professional qualifications and experience of preparing or negotiating VOA Check and Challenge cases.
