Birmingham City Council is looking for a Revenues Section Manager to deal with Council Tax and Business Rates recovery.

The Authority has invested in the creation of a brand new additional recovery section within the Revenues Service. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with experience of working with a wide range of stakeholders in supporting Council Tax, Business Rates and Business Improvements Districts collection to join the Revenues Service as a Departmental Manager.

The successful applicant will need to be able to hit the ground running and be experienced in the management and supervision of teams to ensure that collection of local taxation is maximised. The applicants well developed influencing skills will enable them to provide direction and guidance to teams across the revenue service.

This is a very challenging position that requires the successful candidate to work closely with other areas of the council including benefits, the contact centre, property teams and external partners such as the VOA and Enforcement Agents.

One of the key priorities for the service is to increase revenue collection through the implementation of effective collection methods, timely updating of citizen and business accounts to ensure swift and accurate billing and the proactive identification of changes to hereditaments that impact on the rateable value.

The applicant will need to possess excellent problem-solving skills. Experience of planning, forecasting, and producing management reports to support organisational change.

Experience and Skills

You will need.

  • Management experience
  • experience and knowledge of local taxation law and practice
  • excellent written, communication and customer service skills
  • the ability to understand and clearly explain complex rules.
  • analytical, forecast planning, preparation, and presentation of reports to Elected Members/ or Senior Managers
  • to work well as part of a team and on your own initiative
  • to work to unpredictable deadlines
  • to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
